The Gifts #2: Quinta da Romaneira ’05, ’16, ’17 Vintage Port Vertical (3x750ml pack)

$146.95

Looking for the perfect gift for that “he/she who has everything already” in your family?

We bet he/she doesn’t have a Quinta da Romaneira Vintage Port Vertical under their stairwell!

If you shop with us regularly, you know of Romaneira as an estate on the fast rise – They sit next door to Quinta do Noval and now share the same ownership and winemaking team.

For the most hedonistic of loved ones, nothing really beats opening ALL THREE of these on Christmas morning, giving the taster a good 16 hours to compare/contrast/metabolize the merits of Romaneira’s 2005, 2016, and 2017 campaigns.

Oh and is Romaneira a press darling? Yes:

2005 – “While this was not a generally declared Vintage, there are many attractive, structured single-quinta Ports, such as this. It has ripe sweet black plum and dried prune flavors along with just the right tannic structure to let it age further. While it is drinkable now for its fruit, it will be so much better from 2020. 92 points.” – Wine Enthusiast

2016 – “The 2016 Vintage Port is mostly Touriga Nacional (70%), with the rest comprised of Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão, aged for 20 months in neutral tonels. It comes in with just 77 grams of residual sugar. This was in bottle for about seven weeks when seen. Aromatic and enticing from the first smell, laced with eucalyptus, herbs and dried blue fruits, it opens tight and then evolves beautifully, developing expressive fruit and flavor. This is elegant as well, with a fresh feel. It might be a touch on the leaner side, but not by much. I’m very impressed with this bottling, perhaps the best Romaneira VP I’ve seen. If it continues to evolve well, it should be a sleeper of the vintage. There were 12,000 bottles produced from 25-year-old vines. 94 points.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

2017 – “The 2017 Vintage Port is mostly Touriga Nacional (70%), with the rest Touriga Franca, aged for 20 months in neutral tonels. It comes in with 89 grams of residual sugar. This was in bottle only a couple of weeks when tasted. This seems rich and fruity on opening, but not much more. Its fruit is just delicious, but I didn’t get the sense of structure I saw from the 2016 last year. Yet, with two hours of air in a glass, this really blossomed, showing fine power, more focus and a serious backbone to go with its ripe fruit. This is another fine Romaneira, but I’m not sure yet that it exceeds the performance of the fine 2016. We will have to see how that goes in time and over the years. 93 points.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
