Hi Everyone,
Is it just us or is the Provence rosé “boom” cooling down a bit?
Does it mean that Spring/Summer of 2026 is the time for Tavel to reclaim its title as the most sought-after pink wine in the world?
Maybe, but let’s keep in mind that production in Tavel is tiny…
Provence, for example, pumps out 150 million bottles of AOP Cotes de Provence Rose per year, and the total combined production of all producers in Tavel is just 3% of that.
Yes, 3%.
To put this into perspective, Caves d’Esclans’ Whispering Angel Cotes de Provence Rosé, which I am sure you have all seen, has a standalone annual production of nearly double the entire Tavel appellation!
Ernest Hemingway famously drank a bottle of Tavel each day, but if everyone in the San Francisco Bay Area consumed just one bottle of Tavel per year that would wipe out the appellation’s total production!
Tavel is tiny.
…and production levels in Tavel will continue to shrink.
…and this is just fine, for one reason:
The pricing.
Yes, you would think this combination of high demand and low availability would lead to high pricing, but for whatever reason it just doesn’t – We will go as far as to say that the electric pink wines of Tavel are the greatest dollar-for-dollar values in the rosé category this year, across all appellations and countries of the world, regardless of producer, as long as you are purchasing your stash from an efficient source (in this era of tariffs, a weak dollar, and chains moving to direct sourcing, smart shop selection is more important than ever for the indie segment of the market).
So, will there be a ton of Tavel options in the market this year?
We are guessing not, but we have a fantastic one for you today by way of Domaine Pelaquie’s electric-pink hued flagship release. The calcerous slopes that Luc Pelaquie’s vines root into provide an interesting saline/mineral component that sets Pelaquie Tavel apart from most of the wines in the category.
Many of you by now are well-familiar with this standout example.
At $18.85 you won’t find anything close to it this year.
Cheers!
