Odd Lot #138: Bodegas Naia 2023 “Naia” Rueda

Original price was: $18.00.Current price is: $14.85.

Category: .

Hi Everyone,

Two decades later, the flagship Rueda bottling from Bodegas Naia remains the standard-bearer in the category, and most of you will agree that it keeps getting better with every vintage.

What is the driving force behind this, you might ask?

We wondered the same thing, so we called Naia’s enologist, Laura Sanz.

Her answer?

Minimalism.

Yes, there are now plenty of “fancy” bottlings in the Rueda category nowadays with single plot selections, extra lees stirring, wood aging, amphora aging, you name it, some things are best left alone (I always think of Naia, with its near-perfect minimalist asthetic, as the Fjällräven Kånken of dry/aromatic white wine if that makes sense…)

Joaquin Hidalgo’s comprehensive new Vinous article covering the region just came out echoing this same line of thinking:

“The 2023 Naia is a Verdejo from La Seca, Rueda. It was aged four months on the lees. Aromas of stewed green apple, fennel, lemon pie and pastry emerge on the nose. The palate is dry, broad and creamy, with a vibrant flow that gives the wine volume and precision. A textbook Verdejo with excellent value. 91 points (reviewed at $16).” – Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous 6/25

So…

You are all incredible buyers, and we are Oddlots, so let’s price today’s incoming mountain of 2023 Naia in the teens just because we can?
